I began my cookie journey as a high school freshman. It was a campaign strategy to become Class President, a role I held each year that I ran. When I received the nomination over my opponent that year, I was told he called me numerous racist names in anger. I quickly learned that even children were embroiled in the sad reality of a nation built on hate. I vowed to fight those systems, and to lead with love instead.

I continued making cookies to fund my track career due to financial constraints within my household. I ran hurdles and, through trials and tribulations, found that this sport was in many ways an allusion to my life. By the end of high school, I’d earned myself the title of State Champion in the 300m hurdles, Valedictorian, and got into Ithaca College in the MLK Scholar program.

Being a Black woman from a low-income background in America is an ongoing battle. I learned early on how to navigate the world as a minority and faced hardships that others may not. All of the adversity I faced merely became a hurdle that I masterfully glided over. See, in hurdles, you don’t jump, you lean forward and glide over it with power in your stride; and in the landing, you propel yourself forward even faster.

That’s how I’ve approached life. I’ve learned through the years that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I navigated a full-time college career, pushing a business, working multiple jobs, and the knowledge that this nation has been strategically crafted to oppress certain groups and exalt others. Unfortunately, I exist in a group that has had the rug ripped from underneath its feet time after time. Fortunately, I’m incredibly intelligent, driven, and determined to create a future where this is no longer the case.

Through the culmination of my experiences, I’ve discovered I simply can’t stand by and watch the injustices in America continue the way they have been for hundreds of years. I made it through my younger years hanging on by a thread, and I want a better reality for future children. Now, because I understand I can make a difference, I want to help students who face barriers and give the community these cookies that began in the kitchen at age 14 when I was just struggling to feel like a person. They hold so much power and such an amazing taste that I’ve wowed chefs, mothers, grandmothers, kids, the whole nine.
